How we handle your information.

What we collect when you write to us, join the list or take part, what we do with it, and how to have it changed or removed.

Last updated

In short: we collect what we need to answer you and to run the experience you asked about. We email you about our work because you asked to hear from us, and every email has a way to stop. We use no advertising or tracking cookies. We do not sell your information. You can ask to see it, correct it or delete it at any time by writing to privacy@rare-human.com.

Who we are

Rare Human is operated by Andcutmedia Inc ("we", "us"). Our postal address is 180 River Dr., Apt 1425, Jersey City, NJ 07310, United States. For anything in this policy, write to privacy@rare-human.com. We answer in plain language.

This policy covers rare-human.com, the forms on it, the emails we send, and the information you give us when you take part in an experience, retreat, program or organization engagement.

What we collect

What you give us through the site

The forms on this site collect only what they show you. Depending on the form, that can include:

  • your name, email address, phone number and city;
  • your company and role, when you write on behalf of an organization;
  • what you are asking about: preferred dates, room preference, group size, location, budget range and topic;
  • anything you write in a message field;
  • your confirmation that you have read this policy and agree to the terms, with the time you gave it.
  • when you join the list for a free practice, such as our free meditation: which one you asked for and the wording you agreed to.

Each form also records which page you sent it from, so we know which experience or talk you were asking about.

What you give us when you take part

  • Booking records: what you booked, when, and what you paid. Payment is taken by the payment provider named on your invoice or payment link. We never see or store your full card number.
  • Health and access information that you choose to share so we can run an experience safely and adapt it for you. See "Health information" below.
  • An emergency contact, for retreats and some in-person experiences.
  • Photographs and video taken at experiences, unless you opt out. See "Photos and video" below.

What is collected automatically

  • Hosting logs. The site is served by Cloudflare. Like every web host, it records the IP address, browser type and pages requested, and keeps those logs for a short period to keep the site secure.
  • Analytics. We run our own copy of Umami, a privacy-focused analytics tool, on servers we control. It uses no cookies and does not store your IP address. It counts visits and which pages are read, using a temporary identifier that rotates daily and cannot be traced back to you. For a sample of visits it also records how the page is used, meaning scrolling, clicks and mouse movement, so we can see where a page is confusing. Anything you type is masked before it leaves your browser, and these recordings are never joined to a name or an email address.
  • Form protection. Cloudflare Turnstile checks that a form was sent by a person and not a script. It runs only on pages with a form and may set a strictly necessary security cookie from Cloudflare.
  • Video. Our free meditation and other practices play in a Vimeo player on the practice's own page, with Vimeo's tracking turned off. Vimeo receives your IP address and browser details to stream the video, under its own privacy policy.

Why we use it

  • To answer your inquiry and hold a conversation about what you asked for.
  • To take, confirm and manage your booking, and to send invoices and receipts.
  • To email you about experiences, dates, and our work. See "Emails we send".
  • To run experiences safely, which is the only use we make of health information and emergency contacts.
  • To keep the site and our systems secure, and to understand, in aggregate, which pages people read.
  • To meet legal obligations, such as keeping financial records.

Where the law asks us to name a legal basis, we rely on the contract you enter when you book and the steps that lead to it, on your consent for marketing emails, health information and photographs, and on our legitimate interest in answering business inquiries and keeping the site secure. You can withdraw consent at any time.

Emails we send

When you submit any form on this site, you will hear from us by email. Two kinds of email exist:

  • Replies and service emails: answers to what you asked, booking confirmations, practical details before an experience, and follow-up after it.
  • News: new experiences, released dates, and occasional writing from us. We write when there is something to say, not on a schedule.

Joining the list, including to receive a free meditation or another free practice, means agreeing to our occasional news emails as well. You can unsubscribe at any time: use the link in any news email, or reply to any email from us with "unsubscribe".

Every news email carries an unsubscribe link and our postal address. We act on an unsubscribe within ten business days, and usually at once. Unsubscribing stops the news; it does not stop replies to something you have asked us directly. We never sell, rent or swap the list.

Health information

Our experiences involve breath, movement, facial self-massage, scent and emotional work. To run them safely we ask you, through the participant waiverand at check-in, to tell us about anything that could be affected, such as pregnancy, injuries, allergies or scent sensitivity. This is health information, and we treat it that way:

  • We ask only what the specific experience needs.
  • It is seen only by the facilitators of that experience.
  • It is never used for marketing and never shared for any other purpose.
  • We delete it no later than twelve months after the experience, unless we need to keep it for a specific legal claim.
  • You may decline to share it. For some experiences, we may then not be able to admit you, and we will say so.

Photos and video

We sometimes photograph or film experiences for our site and social channels. Tell us at check-in that you do not want to be included, and you will not be. If you find yourself in something we published and would like it removed, write to us and we will remove it from everything we control. The waiver sets out the full terms.

Where your information lives and who sees it

  • Our own systems. Inquiries, bookings and contact details are held in a customer relationship system that we run ourselves on servers we control, in the United States. Access is limited to the founders and to the people who need it to answer you.
  • Cloudflare hosts the site, delivers it worldwide and protects the forms.
  • Vimeo streams the videos of our practices.
  • Our email delivery provider sends our emails on our instructions and sees only the email address and name needed to do so.
  • The payment provider named on your invoice processes payments under its own privacy policy.
  • Facilitators and venue partners receive attendee names and only the details they need, such as dietary or access needs for a retreat venue.

We do not sell personal information and do not share it for advertising. We disclose it beyond the list above only if the law requires it, to protect someone's safety or our legal rights, or if the business changes hands, in which case this policy continues to apply to it.

International visitors

We are in the United States and our systems are here. If you write to us from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Switzerland or anywhere else, your information is transferred to the United States. Where the law requires a safeguard for that transfer, we rely on the transfer being necessary to provide what you asked for, on your consent, or on standard contractual clauses with our providers.

How long we keep it

  • List and inquiry details: until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them. After an unsubscribe we keep only your email address on a suppression list so that we do not write to you again.
  • Booking and payment records: seven years, as accounting and tax rules require.
  • Health information and emergency contacts: no later than twelve months after the experience.
  • Hosting logs: a short period set by Cloudflare, for security.
  • Analytics: kept in aggregate, with nothing that identifies you.

Your rights

Wherever you live, you can ask us to:

  • tell you what information we hold about you and give you a copy;
  • correct it;
  • delete it;
  • stop using it for a particular purpose, or stop emailing you;
  • withdraw a consent you gave earlier, such as for photographs.

Write to privacy@rare-human.com. To protect you, we confirm requests by replying to the email address we hold for you. We answer within thirty days. You will not be treated differently for exercising a right.

If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, you also have the right to receive your information in a portable format and to complain to your local data protection authority. If you are in California, you have the rights to know, delete and correct described above. We do not sell personal information or share it for targeted advertising, and we have not done so in the past twelve months.

Cookies and local storage

This site sets no cookies for tracking or advertising, so there is no cookie banner. Here is everything stored on your device:

  • Light or dark mode. If you switch it, your choice is saved in your browser's local storage under the key dark_mode. It stays on your device and is never sent to us.
  • Form protection. Cloudflare Turnstile may set a strictly necessary security cookie on the pages that have a form. It is not used to track you.
  • Access to a free practice. When you join the list for one, we set a cookie named rh_access that lets this browser open it for a year. It holds only which practices you can open, signed so it cannot be altered, and no name or email address. A second cookie, rh_member, tells the site you are already on the list so it stops inviting you to join.
  • Invitations you closed. If you close an invitation to join the list, your browser's local storage keeps rh_prompt_dismissed with the date it may show again, and session storage counts the pages you view in a visit under rh_pageviews, so an invitation never appears on your first page. Both stay on your device and are never sent to us.

There are no analytics cookies and no third-party advertising scripts. You can clear local storage and cookies in your browser's settings at any time; the site keeps working. We do not track you across other sites, so a "Do Not Track" setting changes nothing here.

Under eighteen

Our experiences and this site are for adults. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under eighteen. If you believe we have, write to us and we will delete it.

Security

The site is served only over an encrypted connection. Our systems run on servers we control, with access limited to the people who need it. Forms are protected against automated abuse. We store no card numbers. No method is perfect; if a security incident affects your information, we will tell you as the law requires.

Changes to this policy

When we change this policy we update the date at the top. If a change affects how we use information you have already given us, we will email you about it before it takes effect.
