Participant waiver and consent
What you are agreeing to when you take part.
Read this before you book. You accept it when you book or register for any Rare Human experience, and we ask you to confirm it again when you arrive.

In short: the work is physical and emotional. Every practice is optional, always. You are the one who knows your body and your limits, so you tell us what we need to know and you stop when you need to. You accept the ordinary risks of taking part. If anything here is unclear, ask us before the day. We would rather answer a question than have you agree to something you did not understand.
What the work is
Rare Human experiences, retreats, programs and online sessions are education and guided practice. Depending on the experience they may include breathing practices, facial self-massage with the hands and with tools such as gua sha, gentle movement and posture work, work with scent, voice and sound, stillness, and facilitated conversation about what you notice.
None of it is medical care, physiotherapy, psychotherapy, counseling or a substitute for them. Our facilitators are educators; they do not act as your clinician, whatever their other training. Nothing said, written or practiced is a diagnosis or a treatment, and no outcome is promised.
Voluntary, always
- Every practice is an invitation. You may stop, slow down, sit out, step out of the room, or change any practice at any moment, without explaining why. Nobody will ask you to justify it.
- Facilitators do not touch you without asking first. You can say no, and you can change your mind after saying yes. Most guidance is demonstrated on the facilitator's own body and you follow on yours.
- Sharing in a group is optional. You may listen without speaking.
Your health is your call
By taking part you confirm that:
- You are eighteen or over.
- You have decided for yourself that you are able to take part in the experience you booked, and you have spoken with a clinician first if you have any doubt.
- You have told, or will tell, the facilitator before the start about anything that could be affected by the work. That includes pregnancy; heart, blood pressure or respiratory conditions; recent surgery, injury or illness; skin conditions, recent cosmetic procedures or injectables on the face; epilepsy or fainting; allergies, asthma or sensitivity to scent; and any mental health condition for which breathwork, sensory work or emotional work could be destabilizing.
- You will bring any medication you may need and keep it within reach.
- You will follow the facilitator's safety guidance, and you will speak up the moment something does not feel right.
Some practices carry their own notes:
- Breathing practices can cause light-headedness, tingling or strong emotion. Stop and breathe normally if they do. We do not use breath-holding or hyperventilation practices without telling you first.
- Facial self-massage and tools can leave temporary redness or, occasionally, light bruising. Do not use tools over broken skin, active acne, rashes or sunburn, and check with your provider if you have had a cosmetic procedure or injectables recently.
- Scent experiences use natural and synthetic aromatic materials in a shared room. Tell us about allergies, asthma or pregnancy in advance, and leave the room whenever you need to.
We may adapt your participation, or decline it, if we believe an experience is not safe for you or for the group. We will tell you plainly and, where we decline before an experience starts, refund what you paid us for it.
The risks you accept
We take reasonable care to make our experiences safe. We cannot remove every risk, and we do not pretend to. By taking part you accept the ordinary risks of these activities, including:
- physical risks such as muscle strain, dizziness, skin irritation, bruising, allergic reaction, and slips, trips or falls at a venue;
- emotional risks: strong feelings, tears, memories, discomfort, and the vulnerability of a group setting;
- at retreats, the risks of travel, uneven ground, weather, shared accommodation, food prepared by others, and being away from your usual care;
- risks that arise from your own choices, and from the conduct of other participants.
If something goes wrong
- Tell a facilitator immediately, during or after the experience.
- If you are unwell or injured and cannot decide for yourself, you consent to a facilitator giving or arranging first aid and calling emergency services on your behalf. Any medical cost is yours or your insurer's.
- For retreats and some in-person experiences we will ask for an emergency contact. You confirm the person you name agrees to be contacted.
- You are responsible for your own health and travel insurance.
Retreats
In addition to everything above, at a retreat:
- Travel to and from the venue is your responsibility unless your confirmation says otherwise.
- Accommodation is as booked. You agree to treat the property, its staff and its neighbors with care, and to cover damage you cause.
- Alcohol is not part of the program. Illegal substances are not permitted, and their use ends your participation without refund.
- You may leave a retreat early at any time. No refund is due for the unused part.
- You will follow local laws and the venue's rules.
Photographs, video and your image
We sometimes photograph or film experiences to show what we do on our site, in our social channels and in press. We will always say when a camera is present.
- To opt out, tell us at check-in, or in advance at hello@rare-human.com. You will not be photographed or filmed, and if you are captured by accident we will not use the image. Opting out never affects your participation.
- If you do not opt out, you consent to Andcutmedia Inc using photographs and video in which you appear, in any medium, worldwide, without payment, to present Rare Human and its work. We will not attach your name to an image or publish a testimonial from you without your separate permission.
- You can withdraw this consent for future uses at any time by writing to privacy@rare-human.com. We will remove the image from everything we control; we cannot recall printed material already distributed.
- You agree not to photograph or record other participants or any session without the facilitator's and every participant's consent.
The room
So that everyone can be honest, we ask everyone to agree to this:
- What is shared in the room stays in the room. You may talk about your own experience; you do not repeat anyone else's.
- You listen without fixing. No advice to others unless they ask for it.
- Phones are away during sessions.
- You arrive sober and stay that way during the program.
- A facilitator may ask you to leave if your conduct makes the space unsafe or unworkable for others. No refund is due in that case.
Release of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by the law of the State of New Jersey and any other law that applies:
- You release Andcutmedia Inc, its founders, facilitators, staff, contractors and venue partners (together, "the released parties") from, and agree not to bring, any claim for injury, illness, loss or damage that arises from your participation in a Rare Human experience, including a claim based on the ordinary negligence of a released party.
- This release does not cover gross negligence, willful misconduct, or anything else that the law does not allow to be released.
- You agree to cover the released parties for any claim that arises from your own breach of this waiver or the terms, or from your own misconduct.
A plain word about this section. The law of the place where an experience happens applies to it too. New York, where most of ours take place, limits how far a release like this can go for paid activities, and its courts decide case by case whether an activity is instructional or recreational. Where any law limits this section, it applies only as far as that law allows, and the rest of this document stands on its own. We would rather tell you that than pretend a signature removes every risk. What protects you and us most is the rest of this page: honest disclosure, the freedom to stop, and reasonable care on both sides.
Everything else
- This waiver is part of our terms and is governed by the law of the State of New Jersey. It stays in effect for every experience you attend until you accept a newer version.
- If a court finds part of it unenforceable, the rest stands.
- If we provide a translation, the English version governs.
- Health information you share is handled as described in our privacy policy: seen only by the facilitators of your experience, never used for marketing, and deleted within twelve months.
